Damon (00:36.61)
to the Ultimate Playlist Podcast full of choice tracks. I'm Damon.
DW (00:41.0)
I'm Dietrich.
Taj Williams (00:42.183)
And I'm Taj. So, Damon, since I know this is your episode, but I was hoping that you, I could bring forth before you three tracks and hopefully you can pardon all of them so they don't go to the song heaven in the sky.
Damon (00:49.571)
Mm-hmm.
DW (01:06.044)
Go.
Damon (01:06.958)
So true
I shall pardon these sons. But why? Why are we pardoning sons? Wait a minute.
Taj Williams (01:11.231)
You shall pardon these songs. Awesome. Well, I figure we pardoned turkeys, so like, don't we do the same for songs? Okay. That makes sense.
Damon (01:26.198)
guess so. All right, that makes sense. Somehow I'm like clicking with Taj today. yeah, so Turkey Day, it's coming up. Everybody loves the holidays for whatever reason. I think that like the food.
Taj Williams (01:32.859)
you
DW (01:33.97)
Bye.
Taj Williams (01:44.159)
Because it's cold and snowy and you're stuck indoors, maybe?
Damon (01:48.718)
I think it's feels like it's still like just ending summer right now. It's crazy Yeah, I can Texas Yeah, but so yeah, thanksgiving is like it's many things to everybody and There's always music going on Thanksgiving so important that people thought they would create songs about it and Whether they're silly or know serious or whatever
DW (01:58.214)
That's Irving.
Damon (02:18.51)
Yeah, Thanksgiving's always been like a different thing for me. When I was younger, I was always pissed off at the family. Never wanted to really hang out at the table or, I always wanted to go off and do my own thing. the older I've gotten, yeah, it's like a it's become like a million different things. But hanging out and eating good food and like listening to good music. I think that's really what it is for me. So with that in mind.
I was trying to think of my favorite Thanksgiving song and I went back to my childhood or at least my teen years and I thought of like some SNL stuff and some different, I guess you can call musicians. Definitely straight up like one of the best Thanksgiving songs ever is the Thanksgiving song and that's by Adam Sandler.
Damon (03:29.548)
Yeah, so this is awesome, like corny, but like I love it. Like Adam Sandler is one of my favorite comedians. This is actually, I believe it's like around the time or it is from his SNL skit that he did, but sounds kind of like a live version maybe. So either way, it's awesome. And he did, he did do this on SNL too. They decided they wanted to do Thanksgiving songs.
Taj Williams (03:30.329)
Hehehehehe
Taj Williams (03:51.51)
Yeah, no.
DW (03:59.217)
Mm-hmm.
Damon (03:59.36)
And I thought that was really cool how they kind of intro'd it with Adam Sandler. And it's, sure because he had created, created the Thanksgiving song, which is like, you know, I think probably at the time and now it's just, it just makes me happy. Even if Thanksgiving isn't a good time for you. Some people are like, fuck Thanksgiving, fuck families, sitting around the table, it's all bullshit. But yeah, I'm kind of like, I'm torn.
DW (04:19.752)
Uh-uh.
Damon (04:29.752)
for sure, yeah, Adam Sandler, he's got his own production company now. Happy Madison Productions is great. I like a lot of his movies and some of them are serious. Some of them are comedies, which is great. I think...
Uncut Gems is like probably one of the most recent that's like really serious. You don't get, you're not going to get that comedy relief out of him for something like that. You can kind of feel a little bit. He does the weird voices still sometimes, but, you know, Sandy Wexler was like probably one of the weirdest fucking movies, but I loved it anyway, you know? yeah, just all, you know, I think there's something called Cobbler, The Cobbler, which is
DW (05:05.277)
Thank
Damon (05:25.964)
pretty good it didn't have like the corny shit and then he goes into like Zoan which is like kind of nuts just like a weird character I don't know what the fuck but a hot chick water boys goes on and of course happy Gilmore that's like that's my favorite
Taj Williams (05:32.959)
All right.
DW (05:47.452)
and a little dicky.
Damon (05:49.944)
Little Dicky. Where he plays like Satan's kid or something, right? Yeah, so the like aside from his movies, like he does have like a tour, like he tours as a musician. And I think that's fucking awesome. He came through Austin and I missed him. Yeah, I'm definitely, definitely sad about that. And, you know, so I don't know, what did you guys, what did you guys think about?
Taj Williams (05:50.129)
you
DW (05:54.768)
Yep.
Damon (06:20.278)
Adam Sandler and the Thanksgiving side.
Taj Williams (06:23.999)
Well, I'm not sure that I ever had heard it before, probably, but like I had forgotten about it. Like, it's interesting because it's early, early Adam Adams version, because like when he's younger, like he kind of he does the different voices, but he also bumbles like he has a softer tone versus nowadays. Like he's just more boisterous in his voice.
And I think it just came with like ageing confidence is kind of what it feels like, you know, after doing it for 10 years. Like, well, I made it 10 years. I might as well just get a little bit more comfortable. But it's interesting to see the early days stuff because you can't tell if he's just shy or it's the character he's playing or what it is. But it's just it's that that was the interesting thing that I liked about it. And so the version.
I sampled was off of his like a, I assume a comedy album, if not a music album, but you can kind of tell that probably was one he was recorded just after the SNL skit, like within, you know, several months to a year, because like people were requesting it. I thought that that was cool. So that, you know, it's kind of like a continuation of Blues Brothers and went from a skit to an actual like song on an album. So yeah.
DW (07:52.262)
Here's what I'll say. I love everything about himself. And I say that with the grin on my face and a thumbs up type situation. And I mean it because this, the Hanukkah song, he takes holidays, he flips them, he turns them into his own, and he puts his own little spiel on it. And it's funny. And it's funny not only because it sounds goofy, but it's funny because it's authentic coming from him.
Like if anybody else would have tried to do this, they probably would have got smacked sideways or somebody would have hit him with a You know an offensive nature like they were offended by what he was doing or how he was doing a type situation like I said if somebody else is doing it but because it's out of salary because he's already in that lane he was in that zone, especially during that time you know, you can't do nothing but love it and
You know, serious as it sounds, yes, people still listen to it to this day. It's still one of the homesteads of, you know, making Thanksgiving wholesome fun. And I definitely don't have an issue with it. So will I be banging it in the car? No, but it comes on during the Thanksgiving dinner after everybody's eating and ready to play games and crap. Yes, all for it.
Taj Williams (09:18.463)
So what I was kind of curious on was like, only thing that dates it are like the jokes about Darrell Strawberry and then Mike Tyson. And it's like, it's like, yeah, especially after that, just now that there was the second, you know, was it Les Paul? Not Les Paul. Paul. What's his name? And the Tyson, which got me thinking when that came up, I was trying to tell everybody at work about the KSI.
DW (09:27.352)
Uh-huh. Yes.
Damon (09:28.462)
Which is fitting, right?
DW (09:38.801)
Adekna.
Taj Williams (09:47.359)
When we covered the the KSI tracks and him going to fight Jack's is like there's a weird thing that's like man this less this Paul guy like he just like It just wants to fight everybody and keeps losing
DW (09:50.312)
I don't know.
DW (10:03.364)
no, Jake Paul is winning because he ricks fight. Logan Paul keeps losing. has a whole other situation. Different Pauls, they're brothers. Yeah, Logan Paul is the one that's wrestling in WWE and he's actually got a pretty, pretty profound career over there. When he was into boxing, he was losing everything. Jake Paul is actually taking up boxing and he's pretty much boxing everybody that's 20, 30 years a senior or washed up MMA fighters and
Taj Williams (10:09.578)
OK. they're different Pals. OK. they're brothers.
Taj Williams (10:23.903)
Ugh.
DW (10:33.156)
He's definitely bringing in the bag. I think he got like 40 mil off of this deal Taising 20 and you know, that's this 20 million that you can earn for not knocking somebody out. It's like it's like a no-brainer It's all for fun and sport. But yeah
Taj Williams (10:54.687)
Yeah, but it's one of those things like Tyson's being made fun of or not being made fun of. mean, Tyson is being mentioned in an SNL skit like how many years ago and yet he's still recovered and is still boxing to this day. You're like, that's just kind of weird. But yeah, I guess so.
DW (11:13.874)
some people just got it like that bro tyton is one of those folks he's not gonna go away quietly and you know even when the rough stuff came out like he's still making through like a shining star and it's mainly because he switched up his life he was in a dark place during the time but he came back around and he made something of himself and now he's a household name hell he got his own cartoon like
Damon (11:28.856)
True.
DW (11:39.032)
At end of the day, you can't be mad at Mike Tyson for nothing unless you were on the other end of his face during his violence. So it is what it is.
Taj Williams (11:47.667)
Right. Yeah.
Damon (11:47.788)
It's really weird. Yeah, that is a weird one because he was a convicted rapist. And now he's any serve time. He was remorseful, but like when I saw him in the.
The 90s
DW (12:26.152)
That was a yes.
Mm-hmm.
Damon (12:30.968)
It's kind like he got forgiven early. So like he missed getting cut out completely.
DW (12:38.918)
Well, you know, America is about second chances, especially if you're remorseful. Like he did his time. He served his time. He was on hella drugs. He was doing hella kind of crazy shit, drinking all the time. He was on a low spot, right? After he served his time, he said prison was the best thing for him. He came out in the interviews and said that and everybody was like, who the hell says that? But Mike Tyson says that because prison gave him a chance to not only sober up, but it gave him a chance to
to revitalize his thought process of what he should be and how he should be. And he actually became calmer. He became, he found religion in prison. He found just philosophy. He found a lot of things in prison that he would not have found in all the outside because who's going to stop him? When you have that, that kind of force and that kind of power behind you, like it's addictive, but at the same time it's kind of amorphous because
Who's gonna who's gonna get in your way and tell you to stop when you can knock everybody out Nobody, but when you go to prison and now you have to follow by these rules It adjust your mindset and that's what he did for him. And now he's coming out on the other side He doesn't want to be the violent person anymore. He doesn't want to fight anymore. He doesn't want to be out here on the streets anymore He's gotten older. He's got his kids He just wants to be a family man and he wants to support his family and he just wants to live love and live life and
That's the ultimate goal for anybody. So the fact that he found that Nirvana and people were forgiving him for it and plus doing those movies and those skits and things like that, it it's smoothed over the situation. He's not saying that he wasn't a bad guy. He's not saying that he was a victim of his own circumstance. He literally said I'm an asshole and and I've been asshole and I've been doing crazy shit, but I got put in my place and I understand that I'm just a human being amongst this world and you know.
Taj Williams (14:25.961)
You
DW (14:34.76)
people for gaming for it. And so right now, you know, he's still a loved one. He's 58 years old. He looked like it in the ring, but that's a whole other situation. That was a money grab. We all knew that that was going to be a money grab. There was no way Mike Tyson was going to knock out Jake Paul knowing that it would probably sacrifice some of his money. He's not going to.
Taj Williams (14:53.823)
you
Damon (14:55.842)
Well, yeah, so speaking of, you know, like just that time era back to the album, this is actually off of they're all gonna laugh at you. And it seems like appropriate because like that would be exactly what they'd be saying to Mike Tyson, you know, going into the ring. If Adam Sandler was there, you would have warned them, they're all gonna laugh at you. So.
Taj Williams (15:02.463)
Eh.
DW (15:19.639)
no, that's that Christine line or no, what was that? What movie was that?
Damon (15:24.834)
You're thinking of, no, you're thinking of Christine, think, the mom saying they're all gonna laugh at you, right? Or Firestarter.
DW (15:31.598)
No, no, what was the name of that movie?
Damon (15:39.534)
I think it was Christine. Was it Christine? No, it was for the Prom Night movie.
Taj Williams (15:41.768)
You are
DW (15:42.514)
Christine was the car.
Taj Williams (15:46.111)
You're thinking of super bad, aren't you? Not super bad. No. No, you're thinking about the that chick. You know, she had a movie that the SNL chick that would put her hands in their armpits and then smell her hands.
Damon (15:48.492)
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Horror movie. It's the prom night movie. She goes to prom.
DW (15:48.913)
Go!
Damon (15:59.214)
I think he's thinking of a different era. I don't know what that is, Tosh.
DW (16:03.996)
Yeah.
Damon (16:12.526)
But you're thinking of the actual horror movie from the 70s, Carrie. Yeah, she goes to the prom, gets the pig's blood.
DW (16:13.308)
you're about that. Yeah. Carrie, guess her name. I was thinking about Carrie. I had to figure that out. Yeah, and then she's got telekinesis powers and literally trapped everybody in the, the, in the museum and killed them all because she had the, the pig's blood or whatever poured on top of her, the red paint on her dress. And they try to nice and cute and everything and play the joke on her. We're all going to laugh at you. It was like,
Taj Williams (16:17.203)
Yeah.
Damon (16:33.816)
Yeah.
Damon (16:40.782)
Well, they did and then Adam Sandler made an album called they're all gonna laugh at you in 1993 So that was like I think it was it was like a play on that a little bit Carrie But there was a skit that he did and then it turned into like his album so 93 is when That came out and on that album you can hear the Thanksgiving song So
DW (16:42.672)
Yes, they did, and they died.
DW (16:48.388)
I love the
DW (16:55.976)
Right.
Damon (17:10.402)
I'm getting further into the nog here and we're coming up on two more songs. So in tradition of Thanksgiving episode, I am drinking spiked nog. But I want to hear what y'all had picked. What made you think of Thanksgiving? What songs really, I guess, sparked that vibe?
Taj Williams (17:12.551)
Right? No, that's fine.
Taj Williams (17:34.665)
So I'll go and jump in teacher, if that's okay. So I picked the most white person song possible. Second was, well, no, yours is more, I'll get to yours. Yours is, yes, it's up there, but mine is like, it's catchy. It has a slow time beat that everybody can clap to. And it's like,
DW (17:37.327)
Mm-hmm.
DW (17:44.22)
Second, Second.
Damon (17:45.392)
my god.
Damon (18:04.45)
Okay.
Taj Williams (18:05.206)
1234 count is like there's no way you're going to miss the one, the two, the three, the four. Like there's a huge gap in there. So you can be like.
Damon (18:17.196)
Okay.
DW (18:17.736)
You'd be surprised, people still miss it.
Taj Williams (18:21.055)
My pick was a song called Gobble Gobble by Matthew West.
Damon (18:21.196)
The yeah, it's getting very suspenseful here. What was your pick, Ash?
DW (18:22.854)
got the downbeat on the one and it's how it started.
Taj Williams (18:42.943)
Yeah, no. So the weird thing was like the first time I heard this is like, all right, is this when those kids like, you know, kids and not faulting, you know, it's a living, but like it's, you know, there's that genre of songs there for like, kid, like little kids.
Damon (18:48.99)
Okay, so yeah my first impression though is what is he talking about anyway?
Taj Williams (19:13.535)
that they do live tours like, you know, kind of like Yo Gabba Gabba. But, you know, there's little kid music, right. And it's like, you know, London Bridge is falling down and all that. Right. And it's like, is this what this song is? Is it like a song for little kids? And then it gets in the midway part and talks about like fights, arguing over politics and stuff. And it's like, no, he's trying to be like semi serious, poppy with it. But like.
It's like four, four by four. Like the timing on this is like the most four, four white person beat possible. Like you cannot miss anything. And I know that sounds weird, but yeah, it was. So Matthew West released this as a single in 2020 on November 13th, so which makes sense. And so he's kind of known for.
being a writer for Billy Ray Cyrus, Rascal Flatts, and Point and Grace. And then he went on a solo career and did Christian music. And then he's had some hits that have been really high in the Christian music track. And so that's what's interesting. So he does Christian music and Christmas songs. But I think this was his attempt to do, I'm going to do a Thanksgiving song. And he did.
this song and try to make it the most poppy, catchy song you could. And it is a bit of an earworm that does get in your ear. But yeah, it's also the most, like I said, four, four by four song be possible. yeah. What did you guys think of Gobble Gobble?
Damon (20:54.646)
What does that mean, the 4, 4x4?
Taj Williams (20:57.615)
I would say so the I'm just making a joke. So supposedly the theory as far as I understand it, the theory is white people like four four time because it's easier for them to keep time. No, it's serious. But like, but other cultures like three three time because and it's more complicated time. So white people have a hard time doing three three beat or three. Is it three four or three three?
DW (21:00.922)
Let you explain it.
Damon (21:16.014)
Okay.
DW (21:27.4)
Two four.
Taj Williams (21:28.667)
2-4? Is it 2-4? It's 2-4? OK. But most classical music, like most Beethoven, Mozart, everything pre-1900s, all that is like 4-4 times. Most of it. Yeah. And so 4-4 times is the standard of most music, especially simple music like London Bridge. Yeah. Clap on every beat. Yeah.
DW (21:38.842)
Yeah,
DW (21:53.202)
Put it this way, you can clap on every beat.
That's for a fortnight.
Taj Williams (21:57.587)
where some people do syncopation or, yeah.
DW (22:02.032)
And then, you know, others will do the two and the four on the down, you know, the down beat is when the drop bass drop hits. And then the snare is when the clap or the snare hits on the backside. So some people clap on the two and the four, boom, clap, boom, clap. But apparently, and I'm not saying this, but when Tops is referring to, is some individuals will clap on the one and the three. Well, that was supposed to be the down beat.
Taj Williams (22:20.383)
You
Damon (22:21.725)
Hahaha!
DW (22:29.978)
Instead of the boom clap they're going clap boom clap boom they missing missing the tempo altogether. Some people it which is what Tasha's saying. I'm not saying it. Tasha's saying it.
Taj Williams (22:34.067)
You
Damon (22:38.072)
Totally fucking it up.
Taj Williams (22:42.239)
I would say that. So coming from Taj. So, but yeah. But other than that, what do you think of the song? Like it is an earworm, right?
Damon (22:47.342)
coming from Taj.
DW (22:48.771)
You
Damon (23:02.038)
works. mean it could work for like a Christmas or Thanksgiving movie where it's like just a family hanging out doing their Thanksgiving thing I guess. don't know. Like that kind of you know like it's that kind of level of comedy because it's you try to be funny with it but like it's a little bit funny and it feels it's a feel-good song.
Taj Williams (23:11.699)
Right.
Taj Williams (23:23.719)
Right. So and that's yeah. When it's weird because like at times he's I'm not sure if he's trying to be funny or at times he's trying to make it poppy. I can't tell. But yeah, at times I thought like maybe it was trying to be like a comedies along. But then like he doesn't push the jokes that hard. I mean, there's some jokes, but yeah, it's like put the straw in the gravy. That's kind of a joke. Yeah.
Damon (23:25.804)
I can't hate it for that, you know?
Damon (23:53.794)
Yeah, give yourself high cholesterol. So thanks for that. Bad advice. That was a fun one. Yeah, did you put your two cents in?
Taj Williams (23:57.533)
Right?
Taj Williams (24:00.991)
You're welcome. Yeah.
Taj Williams (24:10.591)
so it's not gain a pardon is what you're saying.
DW (24:11.561)
I was trying not to but So...
DW (24:19.016)
Land, nah there's no partners in this one brother. you know Thanksgiving, yes it's a lot to be thankful for but at the same time like that was punting to you. At the same time like yeah I see exactly what you're saying if I was being a earworm. It's definitely one of those songs that you have to be in the mood for. Yes it's family happy go lucky but it's kind of got that irritating vibe to it as well.
Taj Williams (24:46.171)
Right.
DW (24:47.176)
It's like, what does the fox say? it's like, okay, that's where we're going. Yes, this will be played on Nicktoons all damn day. So I get it, yeah. So it's family fun. You can sing it with everybody, but I'm not gonna be singing that shit. This is being upfront.
Taj Williams (24:49.311)
you
Taj Williams (24:56.915)
Right, exactly, yeah.
Damon (25:07.022)
It be good if you made a twist, like throw it in a horror movie. Where everything starts out happy lucky and then all of sudden the song starts kind of winding down.
Taj Williams (25:07.751)
you
DW (25:19.582)
no, throw it in a porn movie, that'd be great. Thanksgiving porn and then gobble gobbles. It was like, they're singing in the background and the mom and the boyfriend are in the kitchen while the daughter's out there singing the gobble gobble song. That'd be great. I was just like, throw it out there.
Damon (25:22.207)
okay.
Damon (25:26.67)
These tricks got a different take on it. my God.
Damon (25:38.348)
Yeah, it kind of starts out that way. Like, what is he talking about?
DW (25:42.727)
Yep.
Taj Williams (25:42.771)
Alright.
So all right.
Damon (25:45.878)
Okay, well I'm running out of nog here and I'm gonna need to do this next song. So, whatcha got, T-Trick?
DW (25:50.475)
man.
So I don't know about y'all, but Thanksgiving and Christmas, my family at the time was a big family and we literally had sections where everybody would go. They would go to my grandmother's house for thanks specifically for Thanksgiving. And my grandma always cooked and people would bring over food. And we had, of course, the kids table.
And then you had the adult table. And so I would have to sit at the kids table with all the other kids. And I was always wanting to sit at the adult table because I always wanted to hear the gossip. So I would try to like pull my chair closer to the door where I would hear everybody talking and laughing and doing all such stuff. But there was a tradition where this particular song was played during that time frame. And it kind of threw me off.
Because I was like, why are we listening to this? But at the same time, I didn't really get the meaning behind it until I got older. And so what I really understood was this was one of my grandpa's songs. Came out in 1942. So he definitely had heard this during that time frame. And, you he wanted to hear it during Thanksgiving when everybody was there so everybody can understand that, you know, we have a lot to be thankful for. yes, pun intended on that one too.
Mainly because you he worked hard but family worked hard and everybody put in there their Efforts to make sure that we all stay family during that time frame so Since then times have changed and things have gone on about their business, but I still make time to try to play this as much as possible during Thanksgiving time frame because it just brings me back to reminisce times of when my family was all together and Everybody was happy go lucky even though there was other stuff going on in the background. You never knew it during that time
DW (27:43.25)
and that's what meant to me, right? So I did Ben Crosby's, I've got plenty to be thankful for.
DW (28:06.13)
So as you hear it in the song, it's literally about not the things that you don't have, but it's on the things that you do have, right? And a lot of people overlook that, especially nowadays. Everybody's worried about what somebody else has on Instagram or on X or on Facebook or any other kind of social media platform, but they're not thinking about what they actually have within themselves. And this was one of those songs that definitely touched my heart.
Once I got older and understood what it was about, and it was a good long period of time where I didn't hear it during Thanksgiving because, you know, people grow and change and, you know, times pass on and I'll go to my other family. And now the family that I have now, I'm trying to introduce the song to them. And of course they don't want to hear it because they're so old. But it's definitely one of those that I think is a tradition that should be played for Thanksgiving. And it just reminds everybody of a simpler time when
Taj Williams (28:53.937)
you
DW (29:04.936)
All you have to do is enjoy yourself and enjoy your family and really bring your alcohols together. sorry to move out a little bit fellas, but I felt like it was fitting given the situation.
Taj Williams (29:17.331)
No, I liked it. This was on my short list for sure. I almost picked this song. But I thought, I don't know. I did it. So here's my, this is kind of a weird question to ask you, but I'm going to pull it back. But was your grandfather, he was in that generation, but did he go to World War II? Like, was he a, yes. Okay.
DW (29:41.478)
Yes. Yeah, you were, you were the borrower too, yes.
Taj Williams (29:45.343)
Reason why I'm tying to get back to that is my grandfather on my mom's side, like, so here's what's interesting. This song is off of the movie Holiday Inn, which is also has White Christmas, which is one of the most popular Christmas songs. So my grandfather on my mom's side would not, whenever that song White Christmas came on, he would turn it off. Else he would break down crying because
DW (29:57.372)
Mmm.
DW (30:04.316)
Yes.
Taj Williams (30:14.047)
For some reason, Holiday Inn, which it makes sense. It's a story about returning vets coming back to the United States, and then they all get together to meet up with their sergeant at the end, and it's Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. You have two of the major people. And it's one of those things that I could understand why as a vet, this song for Thanksgiving and then White Christmas for Christmas. I can totally picture that, especially because that
DW (30:27.207)
Yep.
Taj Williams (30:42.781)
That movie was huge as far as for that generation for sure.
DW (30:45.483)
Yeah. Yeah, he had the 45 and he would play it through there and I always noticed, I didn't think about it until I got older, but I always noticed he was very quiet when he played that song.
And especially like everybody else is just sitting there waiting till it's over with so they can play whatever else they wanted to play. But he literally would pull out the record player. He would pull out the 45, he would put it on there and he would play it. And then as soon as it was done, everybody would go back to laughing and playing other songs and everything. But during that time frame, the song was playing, he was quiet and everybody else was quiet. And I just, didn't understand the significance at the time.
Taj Williams (31:09.308)
Right.
DW (31:30.438)
But when you bring up about your grandfather, that makes perfect sense down because it was a time of reminiscing for him, not in a good way, but the struggle that he went through during his situation. So yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense. Then he watched a whole lot of...
cowboy western movies and jaunty movies and all that. Nobody could ever change the channel in the den. The den was his area. That was his domain. But during holiday season, he would actually let the kids go down there and play and all that. But if he turned on the TV, you had to get out. if you didn't get out, you were going to sit there and watch those damn westerns with him. Because he wasn't watching anything else. He didn't care about sports. He didn't care about news. He didn't give a shit about nothing else except for the westerns that would come off.
Taj Williams (31:52.498)
you
DW (32:16.136)
the Bonanzas, all of the old westerns, that's what he watched. So it was like, okay, I'm just gonna let him have it. But yeah, man, I had to share a little bit of like, and I say, you brought up the whole Whited song situation and I completely understand because it does have a little swing to it. I can see people clapping knowing that that's supposed to clap in the swing versus the ones that's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, but.
Taj Williams (32:36.575)
Right.
DW (32:44.785)
Again, I didn't bring it up. You did.
Taj Williams (32:46.623)
Right. Yeah, but this is swing. So it's a 1, 2, 3 rock step. So it's a half step when you swing dance. So it's not a solid 4, 4. It's like 1, 2, 3 rock step, 1, 2, Yeah.
DW (32:54.906)
Exactly.
DW (32:58.566)
Nah, yeah, it is that little half step that could trip somebody up, but they don't have rhythm, so I completely understand that.
Taj Williams (33:05.651)
Yeah. So yeah, in my younger days, I did swing dancing back in the 90s. You remember that? Fab kids, swing dancing in 90s. Then it took me 10 years to get Fedora. Crybaby, really? You had to bring up that movie.
DW (33:11.522)
Man. I've never done it, but... no.
DW (33:21.757)
I remember that movie. What was it? Crybaby with Johnny Depp. I remember them doing a little dancing in there, but that's about it.
Damon (33:26.264)
Shit.
Taj Williams (33:35.313)
You
DW (33:36.835)
Yes, it was either that or Porky's come on now, let's make up your mind right? No, I wouldn't I know that what night you for still
Damon (33:39.086)
You
Taj Williams (33:41.18)
Yeah
Damon (33:42.484)
That's yeah, for use better
Taj Williams (33:46.867)
So what do you think, Damon, of the good old Bing Crosby in Holiday Inn? Yeah.
Damon (33:48.078)
You
Damon (33:52.974)
You can't, yeah, I mean, you can't go wrong with being Craspy, especially with like a like a holiday song. I think it definitely threw me off a little bit because I was like my mindset was in like the 90s. But we I think we all kind of pick different eras a little bit here and definitely I like I like it. I like that era. I like that sound. The first thing that made me think of is like.
Christmas story, you know the movie the Christmas story and it was kind of that era You know music was there That was Christmas, but it's still the same kind of time of year, you know holidays And I definitely respect your story with your grandfather and Thanksgiving with the family and I mean you two times like you know everything you had to say so Like it's different for everybody for me. I've never met my grandfather's so
DW (34:23.762)
Mm-hmm.
DW (34:33.351)
Yes.
Taj Williams (34:50.419)
I never met mine either, to be honest. By the time I could remember anybody, I had one grandfather. I never met my other three.
Damon (34:50.72)
I... Okay.
Yeah.
Damon (34:59.811)
Right.
DW (35:00.636)
That's crazy. I met both of them. Yeah, my this one was my grandfather for my dad's side who my dad was named after and then he wanted to he didn't want me to be another Robert so he named me my name but my middle name comes from my grandpa and then as far as my other side of my mom's side that grandfather I loved him a lot because he was a principal a principal he was a school
Damon (35:03.671)
wow, that's awesome, teacher.
DW (35:29.896)
What do you call it? A school attendant or?
Damon (35:33.1)
Superintendent?
DW (35:34.024)
Yeah, Superintendent Dallas School District and the whole nine so he nearly had a rep to himself and he had a Cadillac El Dorado a white one that he still loved riding in and that was like the best shit in the world. So it comes from opposite ends of the spectrum. One definitely had prestige and money and the other one was a janitor at Houston, Tilsen but after the war and the whole nine.
Damon (35:39.277)
Really?
Okay.
DW (36:01.32)
You know, they both held their own respective links. So, know, RIP to both of them.
Damon (36:08.034)
Yeah, hats off to all grandfathers and Thanksgiving.
DW (36:15.58)
Yes.
Taj Williams (36:17.663)
Right?
DW (36:18.31)
And all families, whatever tradition y'all do, however you do it, go by it, do it, be with your loved ones. That's all we're saying. End of the day. That's all for you guys.
Taj Williams (36:31.071)
So, before we close out, I got an interesting hypothetical question to ask you. So, does Thanksgiving not have more songs because it's too close to Christmas, or is it just because some holidays don't have more songs, like Halloween?
DW (36:38.834)
Mm-hmm.
DW (36:48.584)
Christmas is better, that's all.
Taj Williams (36:51.859)
Yeah, but it feels like Halloween still has more songs than Thanksgiving.
DW (36:56.54)
Well, think about it this way.
Thanksgiving is a choice whether you want to celebrate it or not. Mainly because, you know, everybody knows like, depending on how you look at it, some people can look at, whoa, yo, birthplace of this, and other people can look at it as, eh, you know, but you kind of kill these people in the process of taking it away. That was stuff, right? So it's got that little bit of background. It doesn't have that background when it comes to Christmas. You know, you just know there was an old guy that was out there in the North.
Taj Williams (37:04.275)
Okay.
Taj Williams (37:20.767)
You
DW (37:29.416)
giving out wooden toys that he made for the kids and then went out and sprouted and became a whole other situation. Hot Green is cool because everybody loves a little darkness in their lives. Everybody can make fun of the ghouls and the goblins and the whole nine, get to bring out a little bit of your dark side. Thanksgiving is kind of that mid-ground, kind of like, eh. Can't make up your mind if you really want to like it or not. So that's why people just don't make songs for it.
Taj Williams (37:35.337)
Right.
Taj Williams (37:53.631)
You
Damon (37:58.636)
just how are you gonna make so many songs about sitting around your family? I guess you could. Most of most Thanksgiving songs are kind of like hokey like or like jokes you know like they're like comedy songs and then most movies about Thanksgiving are kind of that way too and then you have horror movies that just came out.
DW (38:10.435)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
DW (38:18.812)
Yes.
Taj Williams (38:22.623)
Yeah.
DW (38:23.336)
Yeah, was that Thanksgiving horror movie that came out. was like, this is not great. But I could think of a couple of Christopher movies like, that was the shit.
Taj Williams (38:30.61)
Right.
Damon (38:37.28)
It my interest. I mean, it was like, yeah, it was kind of like scream, but like horror, like Thanksgiving version of scream or something.
DW (38:42.502)
Yes.
Exactly. It was like, okay. Yeah. I could do without, but at least I can say I've seen it.
Damon (38:54.582)
It's a time for everybody to forget about shit. Just eat a lot of food.
DW (38:56.88)
Yeah, thanks giving us a stepchild. That's why when Black Friday hits is like everybody forgets about Thanksgiving. It's like, okay, alright, let's go buy these presents. Run out. Yeah.
Taj Williams (38:59.368)
Right?
Damon (39:06.19)
It's like, finally the fucking holiday's over! They just like run out and start buying shit everywhere and trampling each other at Walmart. Yeah, whatever the fuck they do.
Taj Williams (39:07.913)
Thank
Taj Williams (39:11.763)
Yeah. Yeah, but but I guess the reason why I bring it up because I've noticed Christmas creeps closer and closer to Halloween, but I've noticed more people complaining about Christmas being too soon before Thanksgiving. Like they're like, why is it like nobody's like it's like Christmas, like right after Halloween and like we're just forgetting Thanksgiving. And it feels like there's a little bit of a pushback by some members of society being like
DW (39:39.208)
Well, it's. Right.
Taj Williams (39:41.307)
No, stop this stuff. You gotta wait till after Thanksgiving.
DW (39:45.71)
Exactly. Now think about it this way. Think about it this way. You've got NFL games to play on Thanksgiving. You've the Thanksgiving Day Parade that used to be the biggest shit in the world because it was the only thing that was on TV at the time. Exactly. You got so many other things that were representative of Thanksgiving and then the money got involved. And where you gonna spend more on? You gonna spend more on Turkey or you'll spend more on these presents that you gotta buy for everybody?
Damon (39:46.2)
You finish your turkey, dammit!
Taj Williams (39:48.541)
Yeah.
Damon (39:52.994)
Right.
Damon (39:59.042)
Macy's day, Fred.
Taj Williams (40:00.948)
Yeah.
Taj Williams (40:14.244)
gotcha.
DW (40:15.078)
That's what took over Thanksgiving and kind of knocked it out the way.
Damon (40:19.008)
get it. Thanksgiving's a ceremonial time for everybody to get ready to, you know, bust out the fucking gifts and deal with the whole Christmas thing and it's like bloodletting before they go fucking destroy it at the shopping mall.
DW (40:29.269)
Yeah, Thanksgiving is the pace car. Yeah. Yeah, it's the pace car in front of Daytona. There we go. There we go. That's all it is. A dress rehearsal for Christmas.
Taj Williams (40:31.807)
So you're saying it's the dress rehearsal for Christmas.
Damon (40:41.262)
It's a calm before the storm, dude.
DW (40:44.413)
It's the opening act before you get to the main attraction like that's Thanksgiving right now And plus everybody trying to be healthy too like nobody's really caring about all this damn food that you got laid out type shit, so
Taj Williams (40:47.633)
sorry.
Damon (40:48.855)
Yeah.
Taj Williams (40:52.201)
So, okay.
Taj Williams (40:58.751)
All
Damon (40:59.09)
guess I've kind of like I think Thanksgiving like to your point Taj I think Thanksgiving used to be more of a traditional family sitting down for dinner Really being thankful because their shit could have been fucked up the day before for whatever reason like The Dust Bowl blew through and they survived. I don't know Like things were crazier for different reasons before now
Taj Williams (41:17.417)
Right.
Damon (41:25.014)
I guess as like, you know, humans, like we just evolved enough to be able to like, you know, build a shopping mall and go out and buy shit. It's very commercial. You know, I kind of dig some of it, like I guess just because I'm so used to it. But yeah, I grew up in like the era of like we all did like we're like Nintendo just started when we were kids. So that was like a reason to be really fucking excited for Christmas.
DW (41:49.617)
Hmm.
Taj Williams (41:53.535)
Great.
Damon (41:54.454)
shit like that. But Thanksgiving, yeah, it is what it is. I mean, we're in a weird time now too, so. Who's thankful for what? I don't know. Who knows what it is?
DW (42:02.78)
Yep.
Taj Williams (42:06.495)
Okay. All right. What? So I got some lightning fire questions. Whole cranberries or canned cranberries? Can. So, okay. Regular yams or candy yams? Candy. Okay. Those are easy. Do you do mashed potatoes or just skip the mashed potatoes and just... okay.
DW (42:11.603)
god.
Damon (42:14.531)
Hull.
DW (42:14.725)
and
DW (42:23.624)
Candies.
Damon (42:24.548)
Yeah, that's a
Damon (42:31.086)
I'm gonna fucking mash potatoes all the way dude. Gravy, better have some gravy. Stock from the turkey.
DW (42:34.95)
Yeah, yeah. gotta add the gravy.
Taj Williams (42:38.303)
So white or brown in the gravy?
DW (42:41.962)
noooo
Taj Williams (42:44.409)
You
Damon (42:46.104)
Well, I mean, what makes it white or brown? I think it's usually like the turkey gravy, would be brown.
Taj Williams (42:52.199)
Yeah, I guess so. Yeah, because if you use chicken broth, I think it's white.
DW (42:53.65)
Yeah
Yeah, yeah, Ghibli gravy is what we use. it depends on who makes it. I've seen it both, like, and by themselves.
Damon (42:57.176)
that it's used to stock from the turkey.
Taj Williams (42:59.39)
See
Taj Williams (43:05.619)
So do you do turkey Thanksgiving ham Christmas or turkey both?
DW (43:13.064)
turkey thanksgiving ham thanksgiving and then christmas christmas is whatever the hell is out there my family my family now is now my family will will make you know my my wife's mom grandmother they they will throw everything down in the kitchen literally we'll have pizza
Taj Williams (43:23.647)
So spam.
Damon (43:25.089)
Exactly.
Italian food for Christmas,
Fuck yeah!
DW (43:42.364)
you'll have a chili, you'll have a pot of neck bones, and then you're gonna have some egg rolls sitting over at the corner, and they'll pull out some cornbread, and then next to me, the whole staple out of everything, no matter what is on the table, they have to have nachos. So I'm like, how the fuck do you have nachos for a holiday? But that's what they do. anywhere, yes. And then at the same time, like they will literally go to a place to eat versus wanting to make.
Damon (44:03.918)
That makes sense for Christmas,
DW (44:11.792)
stuff at home depending on how they feel or whatever the budget is or any situation like that. I've been on both sides of that spectrum and it's still Nacho's involved. it is what it is. Yeah, yeah, that's.
Damon (44:22.776)
Yeah, mean, strip turkey for Thanksgiving. I mean, that's that's a given. then ham maybe plays a part, but I'm never the one that like procures a fucking ham for Thanksgiving.
Taj Williams (44:25.416)
Okay.
DW (44:31.354)
What kind of turkey? That's a good one. What kind of turkey? Do you want it fried? Do you want it just cooked in? How do you want the turkey?
Damon (44:40.088)
Doesn't matter as long as it doesn't taste like shit, it's not burnt I've had I've had three turkeys gone in my house before one of them was fried and it's pretty damn good
Taj Williams (44:43.081)
Yeah
DW (44:44.114)
Fantastic.
DW (44:48.949)
Mm. Mm-hmm.
Taj Williams (44:51.529)
So last year my wife split two turkeys and smoked them. That was good. Yeah. Yeah, we got a smoker going. In the middle of November with snow, like, yeah, we got the smoker going. Yeah.
DW (44:56.965)
Yeah
Damon (44:57.683)
shit, you guys have a smoker going?
Okay.
DW (45:01.702)
Nice.
Damon (45:05.492)
yeah, that kind of seems fine.
DW (45:06.844)
Yeah, I did a fried turkey and then my cousin smoked one on the pit and I was like, everybody loved both, but they love to smoke one more. was like, screw you.
Taj Williams (45:19.131)
Okay, but I just want to do some, you know, lightning rounds there. So anything else before we close out? I'm thankful for you guys being on the podcast.
DW (45:33.465)
And before my friend.
Damon (45:33.699)
Thank you.
Taj Williams (45:37.195)
Or is that too much kissing out? All right. Well, let's. Yep. So this has been Troy Strikes. You can find this at TroyStrikes at gmail.com or emails it. Sorry, you can email us at TroyStrikes at gmail.com or find this on the website at TroyStrikes.com. Both of those end with a Z.

Taj Williams (46:23.487)
you
Taj Williams (46:30.465)
Damon, is this our closing song?
DW (46:32.775)
Yep.
Damon (46:35.33)
I don't know, but I'm feeling it.
Taj Williams (46:38.351)
shit!
DW (46:51.496)
Thanks.
